What is backup withholding?

Businesses or financial institutions may be required to withhold income taxes on the payments they give you for one of two reasons:

1. You fail to provide them with a correct identification umber when the request it, or
2. The IRS notifies the payer to start withholding because you have not reported all of your interest or dividend income on your tax return.
